Unique Magazines: Our Purpose, Direction and Progress

Music in Print: Celebrating Vinyl, Music Magazines and Record Store Day 2026
19th March 2026The Mag Studio was built for creativity, community and print. So, it felt only right that the very first event in the space brought all three together.
In collaboration with Colour Collective UK, we created an event that was educational, creative and completely free to attend. It began with a short discussion about the role of colour in print, before moving into a hands-on activity where guests created their own colour boards to take home and finish. The idea was simple: explore the power of colour through magazines and create something personal that could be kept as a reminder of the ideas shared during the evening.

As guests arrived, many found themselves pausing in our Mag Room first, drawn in by the endless shelves of print. There was a lot of flicking through pages, snapping photos and discovering titles before the event had even begun.
When everyone made their way into the studio, conversations began to flow naturally. From designers and illustrators to students and artists, everyone had their own reason for being there and their own creative perspective to bring to the table.
We kicked off the event with a short talk exploring the importance of colour in magazines. We looked at how colour choices on covers can communicate mood, identity and theme. This was followed by a small guessing game, where guests tried to match colours with magazines, highlighting how many publications deliberately use colour to reflect the stories and subjects inside.

Then came the creative part.
Using old magazines, we had saved from going to waste, guests began cutting, layering and building their own colour collages. Each piece reflected the colours people felt most drawn to and the personalities behind them. What started as a simple activity quickly turned into a table full of unique, expressive creations.
Alongside the magazines, we provided a range of materials including ribbon, coloured string, markers and card. These small additions helped expand the possibilities of the task, allowing everyone to experiment and express themselves through tactile paper and colour.
Although the event was light-hearted and relaxed, it also reminded us of something important. People want experiences that are physical and creative. They want moments where they can step away from screens, slow down and make something with their hands.

Print offers exactly that.
Events like this show just how versatile magazines can be. They can inspire ideas, spark conversation and reconnect us with the part of ourselves that simply enjoys making things, experimenting, making mistakes and being proud of what we create.
For us, this first event in The Mag Studio felt like the perfect beginning. It reminded us why we created the space in the first place, and it made us excited for everything still to come.
