Celebrating Print, People, and Progress: How The Mag Room Came to Life
14th May 2025

Unique Magazines Celebrates Grand Store Opening – A Haven for Print Lovers in the Northeast
13th June 2025In the northeast creative opportunities and cultural experiences are often portrayed as limited. But Lamin Gibba bridged that gap by creating his own event- one that beautifully combined his Gambian heritage with British fashion.

‘Born to Elevate’ was a celebration of not only Lamin’s graduation of a BA hons in design practice, but his culture too. His debut came in the form of a runway event this being his own graduate fashion show. But this wasn’t just a fashion show- it was an immersive experience.
To kick off the evening, a live African band played throughout, immediately transporting you to the Gambia rather than the Boiler Shop. The music set the tone — warm, rhythmic, and vibrant. Alongside it, the room buzzed with people chatting, photographers capturing candid moments, and best of all the smell and taste of freshly made African food, just like mama made it.

While waiting for the show to begin, guests were surrounded by vibrant fashion from guests, the electric energy of the band, and a sense of community. It was a moment where people truly came together to celebrate one man with a powerful mission.
On the runway, there were beautifully hand-crafted pieces, made authentically in the Gambia. The fusion of heritage with contemporary fashion was unmistakable. But before the models took to the stage, two women performed traditional dances, weaving effortlessly between the models and syncing with the band, building excitement and keeping cultural traditions alive.

Following this was the striking Zimba dancer — a masked figure from the Wolof tribe in the Gambia, symbolising a wild animal. The Zimba is a powerful form of cultural expression, steeped in history and tradition. For many in the Northeast, this kind of performance is something rarely seen, making it feel like a genuine privilege to witness.

As the night wined down, the energy of the people only intensified. It quickly transformed into something that felt more like a family celebration. There was high-energy dancing, countless photos with the custom backdrop, and people embracing Lamin to congratulate him on his achievement. The atmosphere made it feel like the night had only just begun.
This night was more than just an event. It was a true expression of creativity, community, talent and most importantly, culture. It brought a whole new flavour to the boiler shop-one that offered something rare and refreshing to experience.
As Lamin continues his journey with Jerry J Clothing, he continues to show that he truly is ‘Born to Elevate.’
